The reason behind the name of green house effect

  • There is a law in geography according to which hot body emits short wave radiations and less hotter or cold body always emits long wave radiations . for example sun emits short wave radiations and earth emits long wave radiations.
  • There are many particles in the atmosphere some of them absorbs short wave radiations and reflect long wave radiations , some of them absorbs long wave radiations and reflects short wave radiations, some of them absorbs both short wave radiations as well as long wave radiations.Water vapours  have the property to absorb both short wave radiations of sun as well as long wave radiations of earth, carbon dioxide has the property to allow short wave radiations of sun but absorb long wave radiations of earth and reflect them back to earth.
  •  At 0 degree latitude ( equator ) the sun rays falls straight that's the reason there is more heat in atmosphere in the regions around equator and due to this the people in this  region can grow almost all the crops they want. But in the scandinavian countries ( Denmark,Norway,Sweaden) which are situated at 60 degree north in northern hemisphere the sun rays falls slanting not vertically .
  • But the people in those regions also want to grow the crops but  due to less temperature this is not possible . So they find an alternate solution to grow the crops which requires more temperature to grow . They made a house  with the help of  glass instead of bricks and grow the crops inside this house .The glass have the property to allow the sun rays to pass through it but absorbs the long wave radiations of earth and reflect them back to earth , so glass absorbs the short wave rays of sun but does not allow earth's rays back to space so the heat is trapped inside the glass house and there is sufficient heat trapped inside it to grow the crops the wanted . So there is some effect occuring in this house for the growth of crops and inside it there are green plants so it is named as green house effect.
  • NOW THE QUESTION ARISES WHY GASES LIKE CARBON DI OXIDE ,CHLOROFLORO CARBON,OXIDES OF NITROGEN AND SULPHUR ARE KNOWN AS GREEN HOUSE GASES?                               :- In the atmosphere there are many gases and particles present , among them the gasese like carbon dioxide ,chloro floro carbon allow the sun's short wave radiations but doesn't allow earth's long wave radiations back to space and reflect them back to earth and as we explained above the phenomenon occuring in green house with the glass the same thing happening  here in atmosphere. So here the gases like carbon dioxide and other gases like chloro floro carbon ,nitrous oxide, sulphur oxide showing the same effect as in green house and that's the reason these gases are named as green house gases.
